Fall is upon us. Do you have auto-insurance that cover deer-related accidents?

By Michael Rivezzo

Fall is notorious for being deer-season, due to mating and deer migration, drivers should be aware if there auto insurance covers accidents that involve animals. The Insurance Information Institute estimates around 1.6 million deer-vehicle accidents happen every year which amount to $4.6 billion worth of vehicle repairs and medical expenses. A deer can also make drivers swerve out of control to avoid them while causing other accidents.

Most of these accidents peak around October and November with a average of $3000 claimed for each collision. There is a increase in deer traffic around these times because they will start to migrate to different areas to settle for the winter and also food becomes scarce due to the climate change and foraging for food becomes a daily habit . Also a adult deer weighs around 200lbs and can cause severe damage to your car and also cause damage to the passengers and drivers in the vehicle.

Now is the time to call your auto insurance company to check your policy to make sure your covered in case of an emergency. Especially in north-east areas that have a high population of white-tail deer.
